What Our Glass Fitment Service Covers
Our glass fitment service is built around stainless balustrade systems that need accurate panel sizing, clean fixing points and proper edge protection. We fit toughened safety glass into new stainless frames and we also replace damaged panels in existing balustrades where the structure is still sound. Work is handled from our Knysna Industria base and installed across Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay.
Every job starts with the actual opening, not an estimate from a plan alone. We confirm the glass type, thickness, fixing method and the spacing required for movement, drainage and cleaning access. On coastal jobs, we pay attention to corrosion points around clamps, sleeves and base plates because salt air can shorten the life of a poor installation.
- Clear, frosted or tinted panels depending on privacy and glare
- Single panels or full balustrade runs for stairs, patios and decks
- Top rail, side-mounted or standoff fixing where the structure allows
- Replacement of cracked, chipped or loose panels
Measure Up and Drawing Checks Before Glass Is Ordered
Good glass fitment depends on correct measurement and a proper check of the stainless framework. We assess plumb, level, post spacing and the condition of welds, brackets and anchor points before any panel is cut or ordered. If the balustrade was built by another contractor, we confirm the opening sizes and tolerance on site because even a 3 mm error can cause a panel to bind or leave an uneven gap.
Where needed, we prepare shop drawings showing panel sizes, thickness, edge detail and fixing positions. This is useful for stair flights, pool surrounds and stepped patio edges where each bay may differ slightly. For municipal or body corporate work, having the measurements on paper also makes approval and sign-off easier.
- Site measuring with allowances for packers, seals and movement
- Checking of stainless frame alignment before glass ordering
- Confirmation of access, lifting path and nearby finishes
- Note of any wind loading or exposed coastal conditions
Glass Types, Thicknesses and Fixing Details
We work with toughened safety glass for balustrades and handrail infills, with thickness selected to suit the span and fixing method. Typical options are 10 mm and 12 mm panels for most domestic balustrade applications, while some larger or more exposed installations may require a heavier specification. Where privacy is needed, we can fit frosted or sandblasted glass. For clear views, polished clear glass is the usual choice.
Fixing details are matched to the stainless system and the load on the panel. That includes channel fitment, point fixings, clamps, gaskets and sealants as required. We also take care with edge polish and corner finish so the glass sits neatly and is easier to clean. Around pools, schools and guest accommodation, we follow the practical safety requirements that apply to the site use and layout.
- 10 mm or 12 mm toughened glass, depending on span and exposure
- Clear, frosted or tinted finish available on request
- Polished edges for safer handling and a better finish
- Compatible with stainless channels, clamps and handrail systems
How the Installation Is Carried Out On Site
On the installation day, we protect nearby floors, paving and timber with covers where needed, then set out the panels in sequence. The stainless structure is checked again before fitment, after which each panel is lifted, packed and aligned. If gate hardware, handrail returns or corner joints are part of the same job, we coordinate that work so the whole line finishes in one clean pass.
Our site installation lead manages fitment and final alignment, while the workshop prepares any supporting parts in advance. This keeps the job moving even when weather shifts or access is limited. In Knysna and the coastal towns, we also schedule around wind and rain because handling large glass sheets in bad conditions slows the work and increases the risk of damage.
- Final measure and confirmation before glass leaves the workshop
- Protective handling and careful lifting into position
- Level, plumb and gap checks at every panel
- Seal and finish around exposed fixing points if required
Turnaround Times and Project Scheduling
Turnaround depends on panel size, glass type, quantities and whether the stainless frame is already installed. Simple replacement panels can often be turned around in a few working days once measurements are confirmed. New balustrade projects with custom panel layouts usually take longer because we allow time for measuring, shop drawings, glass ordering and installation coordination.
For urgent repairs after breakage or storm damage, we prioritise safe temporary securing where possible and then arrange the proper replacement. This is important for holiday accommodation and commercial sites that cannot leave an opening exposed for long. We also keep in mind load-shedding and local site access so installation time is used properly when the crew is on site.
- Small replacement jobs: often a few working days after measure-up
- Custom new work: allow for drawing approval and glass lead times
- Busy holiday periods: book earlier, especially in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay
- Emergency securing and repair planning available for damaged panels
Pricing, Care Plans and Ongoing Maintenance
Pricing is based on glass thickness, panel size, the number of openings, access on site and the type of stainless fixing required. We quote after measuring because glass must be made to size and there is little room for error. If a balustrade needs repair work before fitment, that is listed separately so the customer can see exactly what is included.
For maintenance, we recommend a basic check every 6 to 12 months in normal inland conditions and every 3 to 6 months in coastal areas where humidity and salt can affect fittings. During maintenance checks we inspect clamps, seals, edge chips, movement in panels and signs of staining around the stainless. Cleaning with fresh water and a soft cloth helps a lot, and any abrasive scouring should be avoided.
