Brenton Gate Upgrade

This Brenton-on-Sea project called for a clean coastal gate solution that would handle salt air, daily use and a sloping driveway. We supplied a custom sliding gate with a matching pedestrian gate, both made in stainless steel and fitted on site in the Garden Route.

Coastal brief for a Brenton property

The client was a private homeowner in Brenton-on-Sea, just outside Knysna, looking to replace an old gate setup that had started to bind and show corrosion. The site sits close enough to the coast for salt spray and wind to be part of everyday life, so the brief was not only about appearance. It needed to run smoothly, stay straight, and keep working through wet winters and summer humidity.

The homeowner wanted one main sliding gate for vehicles and a separate pedestrian gate for everyday access. Both had to match the style of the house and fence line, with a neat finish that would not look out of place from the road. Security mattered, but so did practical use. The family wanted enough privacy without turning the entrance into something heavy or awkward.

  • Location: Brenton-on-Sea, Knysna
  • Client type: Private coastal residence
  • Scope: Sliding vehicle gate plus matching pedestrian gate
  • Finish requirement: Corrosion resistance for salt air conditions

What made the site tricky

The biggest constraint was the driveway line. The entrance sits on a slight fall, which meant the gate could not simply be built and hung like a standard flat installation. We had to allow for the ground levels, the swing space of the pedestrian gate, and enough clearance for the sliding gate to travel without rubbing on the pavers. In a coastal spot like Brenton, even a small misalignment can become a problem once sand, wind and moisture start working on moving parts.

Access was another consideration. The property entrance was narrow enough that we had to plan site measuring carefully and keep fabrication dimensions tight. That reduced the chance of rework, which matters when a project involves custom steel parts and a fixed opening. Load-shedding also plays a role on jobs like this because power interruptions can slow workshop work and testing, so the programme had to stay realistic and organised.

  • Sloping driveway and uneven ground levels
  • Salt air and coastal humidity
  • Tight opening dimensions with limited margin for error
  • Need for smooth movement under daily use

Our measured solution and fabrication work

We started with a site measure and checked the opening, post positions and running line in person. From there our team produced shop drawings and confirmed the gate proportions with the client before fabrication began. The sliding gate was built from stainless steel with a neat framed layout, while the pedestrian gate was matched to keep the front boundary consistent. Both gates were made to suit the property rather than forced into a standard size.

In the workshop at Knysna Industria, the fabrication team prepared the members, checked square and alignment, then set out the hardware points for the sliding gate track, lock positions and pedestrian gate hinges. Where the design needed extra strength, we added it without overbuilding the frame. The aim was a practical gate that would not feel bulky. All exposed edges were finished cleanly so water would not sit in odd pockets after rain.

  • Custom stainless steel fabrication
  • Shop drawings approved before manufacture
  • Matched pedestrian gate for foot access
  • Hardware set-out for reliable daily use

Onsite installation in Brenton-on-Sea

Once fabrication was complete, our site installation team delivered and fitted the gates in Brenton. The sliding gate was installed with attention to the travel path, stop points and lock alignment, then tested several times for free movement. We also fitted the pedestrian gate so it closed cleanly and lined up with the boundary detail. The job included final hardware fitment and small adjustments on site, which is often where a custom entrance is won or lost.

Because the property is close to the sea, we checked for points where moisture could collect and made sure the moving parts were set up for maintenance rather than neglect. A coastal gate should be easy to live with. If a family has to wrestle with the gate every morning, the design is not doing its job. By the end of installation, the whole entrance worked as a single, practical system.

  • Sliding gate aligned and tested on site
  • Pedestrian gate fitted to match the main entrance
  • Hardware and closing action checked after installation
  • Final adjustments made before handover

Timeline, handover and result

The full project ran over 3 weeks from first site measure to final handover. That included measuring, drawings, fabrication, delivery and installation. The client was kept informed through each stage so there were no surprises on finish, hardware or timing. For a residential coastal property, that sort of communication is just as important as the steel itself.

The finished entrance gave the home a cleaner front boundary and a more controlled access point. The sliding gate moves smoothly, the pedestrian gate gives daily entry without opening the larger gate, and the matching finish keeps the front of the property tidy. More importantly, the client now has a stainless solution that is better suited to the Brenton climate than the old setup. It is one of those jobs that should continue working quietly for years if looked after properly.

  • Project duration: 3 weeks
  • Result: Cleaner entrance with better access control
  • Benefit: Better suited to salt air than the previous gate

What we would do again on a similar job

If we were repeating this type of project tomorrow in Brenton, Plettenberg Bay or anywhere along the coast, we would follow the same process: measure carefully, confirm the opening, and fabricate to the site rather than guessing from a plan alone. For gate work near the ocean, the first rule is to respect the environment. A good-looking gate that sticks after the first wet season is not a good job.

We would also keep the installation sequence the same, starting with a proper check of levels and finishing with on-site testing under actual conditions. That approach saves time later and helps the client avoid call-backs. For homeowners wanting custom stainless gates, handrails or other exterior steelwork in the Garden Route, that is usually the difference between a neat entrance and a headache.

  • Measure on site, do not rely on rough sizes
  • Allow for slope, drainage and movement clearance
  • Use hardware and fittings suited to coastal conditions
  • Test the gate fully before handover

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Was this a full custom gate solution?

Yes. Both gates were made to suit the opening, slope and style of the property, rather than using standard sizes.

Why use stainless steel near the coast?

Salt air and humidity can shorten the life of ordinary steel. Stainless steel gives better resistance for coastal homes and needs less worrying over time.

Do you handle both fabrication and installation?

Yes. We measure, fabricate in our Knysna workshop, then deliver and install across the Garden Route, including Brenton, Knysna and nearby towns.
