Sedgefield Pool Fence

For this Sedgefield family home, we built a stainless-steel pool safety fence and gate to keep the area secure without blocking the view of the garden. The job was measured, fabricated and installed by our Knysna team for a neat finish that suits coastal living.

A family pool area needed safer access

The owners of a private home in Sedgefield needed a pool fence that would do two things at once, keep children and visitors out when the pool was not in use, and still look tidy in a garden setting. They wanted something practical for daily use, not a heavy barrier that made the whole patio feel closed in.

We first discussed the layout on site and looked at how the fence would tie in with the paving, wall returns and the pool gate position. The client asked for a clean stainless finish because the home is close to the coast and gets regular sea air, morning damp and summer use. For a pool area, those details matter because rust marks and constant maintenance become a real nuisance over time.

  • Client type: private family home
  • Town: Sedgefield
  • Scope: pool fence and self-closing gate
  • Finish: stainless steel for coastal conditions

Site limits, safety rules and the layout we worked around

The site had a few constraints that shaped the job. The paving line was not perfectly square, the pool area had a narrow access side, and there were existing features that could not be moved. We also had to allow for a safe gate swing and clear walking space, while keeping the fence height suitable for pool safety use.

In homes around the Garden Route, pool areas often need careful planning because the fencing must fit the property, but still respect the safety basics. We set out the posts to suit the ground levels and checked the spacing so there were no awkward gaps. The fence line was kept straight where it needed to be, while allowing small adjustments at the corners and returns. That part sounds simple, but it saves trouble later.

Our team measured the opening, checked the latch side and confirmed the gate position before fabrication started. By doing that early, we avoided last minute changes on site and kept the installation time down.

  • Measured on site before fabrication
  • Checked post positions against paving and wall lines
  • Allowed for gate swing and latch clearance
  • Kept access comfortable for day to day use

What we fabricated for the fence line

We fabricated the fence sections in stainless steel to suit the home and the coastal climate. The frame members were cut to size in our Knysna Industria workshop, then assembled and finished before delivery. For this type of work, accuracy matters because even a few millimetres out can show once the panels are fitted between walls and steps.

The fence was made with vertical members to create a safe barrier around the pool while keeping visibility open. The gate was fitted with pool-friendly hardware, including a self-closing action and a secure latch arrangement. We also included neat end details so the finished work looked intentional from both the garden side and the pool side. No loose edges, no sharp corners, no unnecessary extra brackets.

What the client received was a practical stainless assembly, not just a boundary line. It was built for regular use, the odd wet towel leaning against it, and the sort of conditions you get in Sedgefield when the wind picks up off the lagoon.

  • Stainless steel fence sections
  • Self-closing pool gate
  • Secure latch and hinges
  • Clean corner and end detailing

Fabrication and installation over two weeks

The full job ran over two weeks from final site check to handover. The first stage was measuring and confirming the layout, then we moved into shop drawings and fabrication. Once the sections were ready, our installation team took the fence to site, set the posts, aligned the panels and fitted the gate hardware.

Because the home was occupied, we planned the work to keep disruption low. The family still needed normal access around the house, so we worked in sections and kept the site tidy as we went. That matters on residential jobs because no one wants welding marks, offcuts or grinding dust left where children and pets move around.

During installation we checked the gate swing, latch action and the spacing at the base. We then did a final walk-through with the client to make sure the fence met their needs and the opening felt right for daily use.

  • Week 1: site measure, shop drawings and fabrication start
  • Week 2: delivery, installation and final adjustments
  • Final checks: gate movement, latch action and alignment

Coastal conditions and low maintenance finish

Sedgefield homes sit in a coastal zone where moisture, salt in the air and changing weather can shorten the life of cheaper steel work. Stainless was the right choice here because it holds up better in damp conditions and needs less attention between seasons. For a pool fence, that makes life easier for the homeowner.

We also kept the design simple enough to clean quickly. Pool areas collect dust, leaves and water splash, so a fence with plain lines and sensible spacing is easier to wash down. The clients wanted something that would stay neat without constant repainting or patching, and that was exactly the point of the specification.

If there is one thing we would repeat on similar jobs, it is the early site measure and hardware selection. Getting that right from the start saves time, especially when there are paving levels and gate clearances to balance. It also helps on sites where load-shedding or weather can interrupt a day’s work, because less rework means fewer return trips.

What changed after handover

Once installed, the pool area felt safer and easier to use. The fence created a clear boundary without making the garden feel boxed in, and the gate closed properly every time. The family got a finish that suited the house and a setup that should hold up well over time with normal care.

The best result on this type of project is when the fence stops being something people notice all the time. It should simply do its job. That was the outcome here, a clean, secure pool barrier with a gate that works properly and matches the rest of the property.

For us, the job confirmed again that small residential stainless work still needs the same care as larger site projects. Measure properly, fabricate neatly, install square, and check every moving part before you leave.
