Shops

Retail premises need parts that look neat, handle daily traffic and survive coast air. Sisonke Stainless designs, fabricates and installs shop entrances, bollards, handrails and practical stainless details for businesses across Knysna and the Garden Route.

What shops usually need at ground level

In a shop setting, the first things people touch are usually the most important. That includes entrance handrails, queue barriers, bollards, gate posts, counter guards, tray pass sections, and small stainless trims around doors and loading areas. In Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and the coastal towns along the N2, these parts need to stand up to humidity, salt in the air and constant foot traffic. They also need to be easy for staff to clean before opening and after closing.

We are often asked to help with small but important details that reduce damage and keep a shop looking cared for. That may be a pair of polished bollards at a parking bay, a handrail for a step at the entrance, a return rail around a lift landing, or a simple stainless protecton plate at a door edge. For shop owners, the aim is practical: fewer repairs, safer movement for customers, and fittings that do not rust at the first sign of winter rain.

  • Entrance rails and step rails
  • Bollards and vehicle protection posts
  • Queue rails and customer guidance rails
  • Door guards, corner trims and kick plates
  • Custom stainless covers, brackets and small fittings

How we measure, plan and fit around trading hours

Retail work needs careful planning because the shop still has to trade while the work is happening. Our process usually starts with site measuring in the morning or after hours, depending on access. We look at floor levels, door swings, slab edges, parking layout, and where customers move from the street or car park into the premises. Good measurments at the start save a lot of rework later, especially where paving slopes or older buildings are not perfectly square.

Shop drawings are then prepared for approval before fabrication starts. That is useful when the client wants a specific finish, a narrow clearance for a gate, or a bollard line that must not block deliveries. In George or Mossel Bay, for example, wind exposure can affect where screens and supports are placed. In Knysna and Sedgefield, salt air means we pay attention to fixings and drainage so water does not sit against the metal.

  • Measure first, fabricate second, install when access is clear
  • Check door swing, trolley paths and wheelchair movement
  • Keep bollards clear of drainage channels and manholes
  • Allow for power failures and after-hours installation where needed

Practical stainless sets for retail entrances

A shop entrance does not need complicated fittings, it needs the right set in the right place. For most premises we work with 304 or 316 stainless depending on exposure, use and budget. On the coast, 316 is often the better choice for longer life. Where the shop has a sheltered arcade or inland position, 304 can be suitable if the finish is maintained. We also help with glass fitment where a cleaner front-of-house look is needed, especially on modern retail fronts and mall entrances.

Typical retail combinations include a handrail at a small step, two or more fixed bollards to protect glass, and a tidy gate or access barrier at the side entrance for staff and deliveries. If there is an internal courtyard, we can make matching rails so the whole frontage feels considered rather than patched together. We also do surface restoration and repairs when an existing rail has scuffs, tea staining or loose brackets from years of use.

  • Entrance handrail with wall returns and secure base plates
  • Bollards set to protect glazing, corners and ATM areas
  • Staff access gates with hardware fitment
  • Glass support brackets and closing details
  • Repairs, polishing and re-alignment of tired fittings

Common mistakes that cost shops later

A lot of retail stainless problems start with rushing the layout. The most common issue is putting bollards too close to the doorway, which makes deliveries awkward and can trap trolleys. Another mistake is using mild steel fixings in a coastal shop. They may look fine for a few months, then rust marks start running down the face of the rail or paving. We also see rails fitted without enough thought to cleaning, so dust and water collect at the base and the area starts looking untidy fast.

Another one is forgetting access for maintenance. If a gate hardware set cannot be reached for adjustment, staff end up forcing it shut and the hinges wear unevenly. In busy shops, it is worth planning for cleaning staff, delivery drivers and security checks from the start. A small detail like moving a bollard 150 mm can make the difference between a practical entrance and one that becomes a daily complaint.

We usually advise clients to think about the shop from three angles: customer movement, staff movement and vehicle movement. When all three work together, the fittings last longer and the front of the business stays tidy.

Budget ranges for shop stainless work

Every shop site is different, but it helps to know the rough budget bands before asking for pricing. Small jobs such as a single handrail, a short queue section or one or two bollards can often start from about R4 500 to R12 000 depending on size, fixing detail and finish. A fuller entrance package with several bollards, a handrail, gate hardware fitment and installation may sit in the R18 000 to R45 000 range. Larger retail fronts with glass fitment, custom brackets and more complex fabrication can move beyond that.

The main cost drivers are material grade, total length, wall or floor fixing conditions, and whether work must happen after trading hours. If the shop is in a busy centre in George or Knysna, traffic control and access windows can also affect the quote. Coastal sites may also need stronger materials or more frequent maintenance checks, which is worth allowing for early rather than paying later for repairs.

  • Simple handrail or step rail: from about R4 500
  • Several bollards with installation: often R8 000 to R18 000
  • Entrance package with rail, bollards and gate hardware: R18 000 to R45 000
  • Custom retail frontage or multiple fittings: quoted after site measure

Where we work and what shop owners can expect

We work from our Knysna Industria base and cover Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay. For retail clients this means we can handle site visits, workshop fabrication and installation without dragging the process out. The team includes estimating, shop drawings, fabrication, site installation and repair support, so the same job can be handled from first measure through to final handover.

Shop owners usually want three things: a clean finish, clear communication and an installation that does not interrupt trade more than necessary. That is where a straightforward process helps. Once the measurements are confirmed and the drawings signed off, fabrication moves to the workshop, and installation is scheduled around your trading hours where possible. If the premise has security gates, delivery entries or a back-of-house yard, we can tie those details into the main entrance work so the whole property works as one unit.

For retail premises on the Garden Route, stainless is often the practical choice because it handles wear, cleans easily and keeps its appearance with sensible upkeep. If you need new shop rails, bollards or custom stainless parts, we can advise on the right layout before the first hole is drilled.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Do you install shop stainless after trading hours?

Yes, where access allows. We can schedule measuring and installation around opening times, delivery slots or quieter periods so the shop can keep trading.

What stainless grade is best for a shop near the coast?

For exposed coastal sites, 316 is often the better option. For more sheltered or inland retail spaces, 304 may be suitable if the finish is maintained.

Can you match new fittings to existing rails or gates?

Yes. We can repair, restore and fabricate new parts to suit what is already there, so the frontage looks consistent and works properly.
