Maintenance Checks

Coastal stainless needs regular eyes-on checks, especially near the sea where salt, wind and movement work on fixings over time. Sisonke Stainless provides planned maintenance checks for balustrades, handrails, gates and custom stainless parts across Knysna and the Garden Route.

What our maintenance checks cover

Our maintenance checks are for stainless installations that have already been fitted and need a proper condition review, not a quick glance. We look at how the structure is holding up, whether any fasteners have loosened, if movement has developed in posts or brackets, and whether the finish is still performing in the coastal environment.

In Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Sedgefield, salt air can sit on fittings and small crevices. That can lead to tea staining, surface marks, early wear on hardware and stain lines around seal points. We check for those signs early so you can plan small repairs before they turn into bigger work.

  • Balustrades and handrails, including posts, rails, weld areas and brackets
  • Gates, hinges, latches, locks and gate stops
  • Glass support points, clamps and seal condition
  • Marine fitouts and exposed coastal fixtures
  • Surface condition, staining, pitting and localised corrosion

Why coastal properties need regular inspections

Stainless steel does well in our area, but it still needs attention. Coastal moisture, wind-driven salt and regular use can loosen fixings, wear moving parts and create problems where water sits in joints. A property in Wilderness faces different exposure to an inland site, but both still benefit from a set maintenance programme.

We often find issues that owners only notice once the gate starts sticking or a handrail shifts under load. Checking early keeps your installation safe and keeps the finish looking clean. It also helps with compliance on customer-facing sites, holiday lets and body corporate properties where upkeep is expected.

For commercial sites in George, Mossel Bay and the Knysna Industria area, our checks are useful after heavy holiday use, winter weather or any building work nearby that may have affected the installation. A small tweak now is usually cheaper than stripping and reworking a section later.

How we carry out a maintenance check

We start by confirming the installation type, age and exposure level. Then we inspect the visible structure and the fixing points, measure any movement if needed, and note any wear on hardware or finish. Where access allows, we check hidden fixings, base plates and areas that trap dirt or moisture.

Once the inspection is done, we give you a practical report with what is sound, what needs attention and what should be scheduled next. If repairs are minor, we can often complete them there and then or book them in shortly after. If more detailed work is needed, we will quote clearly before proceeding.

  • Site walk-through and condition review
  • Fastener, hinge and support-point inspection
  • Movement check and alignment assessment
  • Finish assessment and corrosion spotting
  • Maintenance notes and action list

Typical turnaround and booking windows

For homes and smaller sites, a maintenance check is often scheduled within a few working days, depending on our current install run and the site location. In busy periods after holidays or before peak rental season, we recommend booking ahead so the inspection fits your timing.

A standard on-site check usually takes between 45 minutes and 2 hours for a typical balustrade or gate set, though larger coastal properties or multi-level installations may take longer. If your site needs access coordination, parking planning or body corporate approval, we can work around that so the visit runs smoothly.

We cover Knysna, Sedgefield, Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay, and we can group nearby inspections to keep call-out costs sensible. For properties with several stainless items, we can inspect more than one area in the same visit.

Pricing approach for inspections and follow-up work

We price maintenance checks in a straightforward way. The inspection fee depends on the site size, how easy it is to access the installation, and whether the work is a single item or a full property check. If you want a follow-up repair quote, we can base it on what we see on site, with no guessing.

Where possible, we separate the inspection and the repair work so you know exactly what you are paying for. That makes it easier to budget for upkeep on holiday homes, guest properties and commercial buildings. If the site needs a fix and you want it handled quickly, we can usually combine the check and the repair in one appointment.

  • Inspection-only pricing for planned upkeep
  • Call-out pricing for outlying areas and larger sites
  • Repair quotes based on actual condition, not estimates from photos alone
  • Maintenance packages available for repeat inspections

Recommended maintenance intervals for Garden Route sites

How often you should inspect stainless depends on where it is installed and how hard it works. A sheltered inland handrail may only need a yearly check, while a coastal gate or seafront balustrade should be looked at more often. Properties with rental turnover or public access also need shorter intervals because use is heavier and wear shows up sooner.

As a general guide, we recommend a first check after the initial settling period, then regular inspections from there. If your installation is close to breakers, on a deck, or near pool chemicals, it is worth tightening the schedule. Waiting too long can allow a small fault to spread through fittings, and then the repair gets bigger than it should.

  • After new installation: check once the structure has settled
  • Coastal homes: every 6 to 12 months
  • Busy gates and access points: every 6 months
  • Holiday or rental properties: before peak season and after it ends
  • Marine and high-salt exposure: more frequent checks as needed

What to expect on the day

Our team arrives ready to inspect, note findings and, if needed, carry out small on-site adjustments where the job allows. We work neatly and keep disruption low, which matters on occupied homes, guest houses and active business premises. If your installation needs replacement parts, we will identify them clearly and explain the next step.

You will not get vague advice from us. We will tell you whether the item is fine for now, whether a fix should be planned soon, or whether it needs attention straight away. That way you can make a practical decision, not a guess. If a check uncovers an issue outside stainless work, such as rotten timber backing or failed masonry anchors, we will flag it so the right trade can address it.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Do maintenance checks include repairs on the day?

If the fault is small and the site allows it, we can often handle minor adjustments during the visit. Larger repairs are quoted after inspection so you know the cost first.

How often should a seafront balustrade be checked?

For exposed coastal properties, every 6 to 12 months is sensible. If the installation takes heavy salt spray or frequent use, shorter intervals may be better.

Can you inspect more than one item in the same visit?

Yes. We can check balustrades, gates, handrails and other stainless fittings in one appointment, which is usually the best value for a property owner.
