A private entrance for a Belvidere home
This project was for a homeowner in Belvidere, Knysna, who needed a driveway gate that looked clean from the street and still felt solid at the hinges and latch side. The brief was simple on paper: create a gate that matched the property style, gave clear access for vehicles, and did not clash with the stonework and planting around the entrance.
Belvidere gets plenty of moisture off the lagoon side and that means fittings, welds and finish all matter. We proposed a stainless steel gate with a custom infill pattern, sized to the actual opening after site measuring. The client wanted something stronger than a light decorative gate, but without a heavy industrial look. That is where stainless works well, because it can be detailed neatly and still cope with weather and regular movement.
What we found on site in Knysna
The opening had a few practical limits. The driveway sat on a slight slope, the boundary walls were not perfectly square, and there was limited space for gate swing close to the vehicle path. We also had to allow for day to day use, so the gate could open without scraping paving or putting strain on the post side.
During the initial measure-up we checked the clear opening, wall plumb, hinge positions and latch alignment. We also looked at the access for installation vehicles and tools, because narrow plots in and around Knysna can make loading and handling awkward. The homeowner wanted the entrance to be secure but still easy to use for visitors, deliveries and rubbish collection. That meant careful planning on the opening width and hardware placement.
- Site measured on the property in Belvidere
- Opening checked for slope and post alignment
- Gate swing planned to suit the driveway approach
- Hardware positioned for daily residential use
Custom stainless fabrication for the infill pattern
Once the final sizes were confirmed, we moved into shop drawings and fabrication at our Knysna Industria base. The gate frame was made from stainless box section with a custom infill pattern set out to give privacy without closing the entrance completely. We kept the lines straight and the spacing even, since small errors show quickly on a gate that sits in full view from the road.
The fabrication included cut, fit and weld work, then finishing to suit outdoor exposure. All welds were cleaned and dressed where needed, and we checked for consistent geometry before the gate left the workshop. Because the property is in a coastal area, the material choice and finish needed to suit salt in the air and general humidity. We also allowed for proper clearances so the gate would not bind as the seasons changed.
- Stainless steel frame with custom infill detail
- Made to the final measured opening
- Workshop checked for square, alignment and smooth movement
- Outdoor finish selected for coastal conditions
Hardware, fitment and the clean install
We supplied and fitted the required gate hardware on site, including hinges, latch and the related fixings. The gate was set up so the swing action was neat and the closing point landed properly without forcing the frame. We also checked the catch side to make sure the gate seated correctly against the stop and did not rattle in the wind.
Installation took place over the planned site visit, with final adjustment done after the gate was hung. Ruan Botha led the site fitting, with workshop support from Johan Nel and estimating handled by Nokuthula Dlamini. Once in position, we tested the movement several times, checked the line against the driveway edge and made sure the infill pattern sat level from the roadside. The result was a gate that looked like part of the property rather than something bolted on afterwards.
For local homes, especially where load-shedding and basic access control can affect daily routine, a gate has to work with minimal fuss. That means solid hardware, simple operation and a layout that the owner can live with every day, not just on the day of handover.
Project timing and handover in four weeks
This Belvidere driveway gate ran over four weeks from first measure to final handover. Week one covered site measuring and the brief. Week two covered shop drawings and approval of the final layout. Week three was fabrication and finishing in the workshop. Week four was delivery, installation and final adjustments on site.
The timeline stayed tight because the client had a clear idea of what they wanted and the opening did not need major civil changes. We kept the work moving by coordinating workshop, site and hardware supply under one team. Siyabonga Mthembu oversaw the project flow, with Annelise van Wyk managing operations so the install date could be met without rushing the finish. That kind of coordination matters on residential jobs where access windows are small and neighbours are close by.
- Total project duration: 4 weeks
- Measure, fabricate, install and adjust
- No major wall rebuilds required
- Final handover after movement checks and alignment confirmation
What changed for the property after installation
The finished gate gave the entrance a sharper first impression and a practical barrier that suits a home in Knysna. It brought the driveway line into order, helped define the boundary and added a sense of finish to the front of the plot. More importantly, it opened and closed properly from the first day, which is what homeowners want from a gate that gets used every day.
The client was pleased with the custom infill pattern because it gave the entrance a more personal look than a standard off-the-shelf panel. For us, the result was a tidy residential installation with the sort of details we would repeat on another coastal property: accurate measuring, a frame built to the actual opening, and hardware chosen for long service. If we did this type of gate again, we would keep the same approach, especially the early site check and the final swing test before sign-off. That small extra time saves later call-backs, and it keeps the gate working properly through rain, wind and regular use.
