Made to suit the drain, not the other way round
Drain covers and grates are not a one-size item. The right cover depends on the width of the channel, the amount of water moving through it, and how the area is used day to day. In Knysna and along the coast, we often work in places where salt air, damp concrete and constant wash-downs shorten the life of mild steel or painted covers. Stainless steel gives a cleaner finish and handles moisture far better.
We make drain covers for internal wet areas, outside paving, driveway channels, laundry drains, commercial prep rooms and around pools. Some covers are designed to sit flush with tiles or pavers, while others are slightly raised for easier lifting and cleaning. If the area gets trolleys, foot traffic or vehicle movement, we can design the cover with the right support so it does not bow or chatter under load.
Each cover is measured on site when needed, then made to the opening and the finish around it. That matters because a cover that is even 5 mm out can rattle, catch dirt, or leave a gap that looks untidy and is hard to clean.
Sizes, slot patterns and thickness options
We fabricate covers in common sizes and also to your exact dimensions. Standard widths often start around 100 mm and go up to 600 mm or more, with longer sections made as single pieces or in linked modules for larger channels. For wider drain runs, modular sections make future lifting and cleaning easier, especially in kitchens and service yards.
Choice of thickness depends on use. Light foot traffic may suit 1.5 mm or 2 mm sheet with support underneath, while heavier areas often need thicker plate or reinforced bars. Slot spacing is set to allow water flow without letting large debris through. In places with leaves, sand or food waste, we can open the pattern enough for flow but still keep the grate practical for maintenance.
- Square, rectangular or linear drain covers
- Perforated sheet or slotted grate patterns
- Lift-out covers for easy cleaning
- Flush-fit frames for tiled finishes
- Reinforced options for light vehicles or trolleys
We also make covers to fit existing channels where the concrete opening is not perfectly square. In older properties, especially where slabs have shifted a bit over time, a made-to-measure cover is often the only sensible answer.
Where stainless drain covers work best
These covers suit any area that sees regular water and needs a neat finish. Common uses include shower drains, laundry rooms, sculleries, patios, braai areas, commercial kitchens, fish-cleaning stations, boat wash-down points and external drainage along pathways or retaining walls. In coastal towns like Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield and Mossel Bay, stainless is especially useful because salty moisture can attack ordinary metal very quickly.
For business premises, the cover can help keep the site compliant and easier to maintain. A well-fitted cover reduces trip points, makes cleaning quicker and limits the chance of debris building up inside the channel. In food spaces, a removable stainless grate also helps with hygiene checks because it can be lifted, washed and put back without much effort.
We also supply covers for stormwater channels and yard drains where the opening must handle leaf drop and heavy rain. During wet Garden Route winters, that extra water movement matters and the drain cover must stay secure and clear, not block up after the first big downpour.
Fitting, fixing and site conditions to plan for
Drain covers are usually installed after the drain line or channel is in place. We can fit them into new work or replace old covers without disturbing the whole area. On site we check the opening, the edge condition, and how the cover will sit against tiles, paving or a concrete lip. If a frame is needed, we make that as well so the finished piece sits level and does not wobble.
No gas is needed for the product itself. Power needs are only part of the fabrication process in our workshop, where cutting, welding and finishing are done with workshop equipment. On site installation is straightforward and normally needs basic access, measuring space and safe working conditions. For some larger covers, two installers may be needed to position the section properly.
- Allow access for measuring before final tiling or paving if possible
- Leave enough edge depth for a support frame where required
- Check that the drain falls correctly and does not hold water at the opening
- Plan for easy lifting if the cover will need regular cleaning
If the cover will be used in a public area or on a business premises, we can advise on load expectations and how to keep the finish neat under daily use. That includes setting the top surface level enough to avoid snagging and making sure the cover can be removed without damaging the surrounding finish.
Care, cleaning and marine-side maintenance
Stainless drain covers need simple care, not constant attention. In most cases a rinse with clean water and a mild detergent is enough. In kitchens and wash areas, grease and soap residue should be removed often so the slots stay open. In coastal locations, a regular rinse is helpful because salt deposits can build up even on stainless and dull the finish over time.
We recommend checking the cover and the surrounding frame every few months. Look for trapped grit, loose supports, signs of movement and any rust staining coming from nearby fixings or concrete. Stainless itself resists corrosion well, but nearby materials can still leave marks if they are not kept in order.
For marine fitouts and seawater exposed areas, maintenance checks are worth planning into the schedule. A quick inspection now and then catches small issues before they become a bent grate or a blocked drain. If a cover has been scratched or marked, surface restoration may help bring back the finish and keep the area looking tidy.
What to send when asking for a quote
To price a drain cover properly, we need clear information on the opening and how the area is used. A photo helps, but measurements matter most. If you are replacing an existing cover, send the old size and a picture of how it sits. If it is a new opening, include the width, length, depth and the type of finish around the drain.
The following details help us avoid delays and make sure the cover is right first time:
- Opening width, length and depth in millimetres
- Location and whether the area is internal or external
- Foot traffic, trolley traffic or light vehicle use
- Preferred finish, such as brushed or polished stainless
- Need for lift-out access or fixed installation
- Any nearby tiles, paving or frame details that affect the fit
If the drain is in a busy space, tell us how often it gets cleaned and whether anything has to pass over it. That helps us recommend the right thickness and support. We work from Knysna Industria and install across Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay, so site visits can be arranged where needed.
