Pedestrian Gates

Sisonke Stainless makes and installs neat stainless pedestrian gates for side paths, front entries and controlled access points across Knysna and the Garden Route. Each gate is measured on site, fabricated in our Knysna Industria workshop and fitted to suit the opening, latch position and finish you need.

Stainless gates for daily foot traffic

A pedestrian gate is a smaller access gate meant for people, not vehicles. It gives you a proper entry point on a side path, front boundary or service passage without the bulk of a full driveway gate. In stainless steel, it suits coastal areas well because the material handles salt air better than mild steel, especially where spray, mist and humidity are part of everyday life.

We make gates for homes, guest houses, strata complexes, offices, schools and light commercial properties in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay. The gate can be plain and functional or matched to nearby railings, balustrades and fencing so the property has one clean look. If needed, we can add glass inserts, privacy infill or a simple bar pattern for visibility and security.

Most pedestrian gates are built for easy use by families, staff and visitors. That means a proper swing, a latch that sits at the right height, and clear opening space for daily movement. We also set them up to work well when there is a slight slope, paving falls away from the door, or the opening is tight on one side.

Common sizes and gate options

The right size depends on the opening and how the gate will be used. A standard pedestrian gate is often between 900 mm and 1 200 mm wide, with a height from 1 800 mm to 2 100 mm depending on the boundary and the level of privacy needed. For wheelchair access or moving bins, prams and small trolleys, we can allow extra width and adjust the threshold detail so it is easier to pass through.

  • Single leaf gates for standard side passages and front entries
  • Higher privacy gates with tighter spacing or solid infill sections
  • Open style gates for better visibility into gardens and driveways
  • Gate and post combinations for new boundary lines
  • Matching handrail or balustrade tie-ins where the gate sits near steps

Finishes can be brushed, polished or left with a more practical satin look. Where the gate is exposed to coastal air, we normally recommend stainless grades and fixings selected for exterior use. If the opening is narrow, we can make the frame slimmer without losing strength, though the exact section size will depend on the span and whether the gate carries glass or heavier infill.

Where a pedestrian gate suits best

These gates are used wherever people need controlled access without opening a large vehicle gate. In homes, that often means the front path, side access to the washing line, or a direct route to the garden or back yard. In guest lodges and small business premises, the gate can separate staff access from public entry and help with after-hours security.

Pedestrian gates are also useful on properties with load-shedding backup systems, because they do not need motors to operate. A solid manual gate is practical where the power is unreliable or where you want a simple entry that still locks properly. If you already have an automated driveway gate, a separate pedestrian gate can reduce wear on the motor and stop people from opening the large gate for every short trip in and out.

On coastal properties, we often replace older mild steel gates that have rusted at the latch points, bottom rails or hinge sides. Stainless is not maintenance free, but it gives better service life in salty conditions and usually keeps a cleaner appearance with less staining around welds and fasteners.

How we measure, make and fit it

We start with a site measure at the actual opening. That lets us check the wall returns, paving levels, hinge side, lock side and any nearby drainage that might affect swing space. From there we prepare shop drawings so the gate opens in the right direction, clears the ground and lines up with the latch or lock set. If the opening is uneven, we can allow for that in the frame and keep the finished lines neat.

Our workshop team then fabricates the gate in Knysna Industria. Depending on the design, that may include frame welding, hinge preparation, infill setting, lock pocket work and finishing before site installation. We install across the Garden Route and handle the final alignment on site so the gate closes properly and does not drag. On some jobs, especially where glass or heavier hardware is involved, we return for a second check once everything has settled.

  • Site measuring and opening verification
  • Shop drawings for approval before fabrication
  • Workshop build and finish preparation
  • Onsite installation and final alignment
  • Hardware fitment and latch testing

Installation needs, power and nearby services

Most pedestrian gates do not need power or gas. A manual gate is the simplest option and only needs proper posts, hinges and a secure latch or lock. If you want an electric lock, keypad entry or intercom tie-in, then power may be required at the lock point or access control position. We can work around the available supply and advise on the cleanest route for cabling, especially where the wall finish has already been completed.

Because we also do gate hardware fitment, we can supply and fit the practical parts that matter most: hinges, latches, locks, closers and catches. If the gate is beside a wall or pillar, we check the fixing method carefully so it holds in normal use and during windy conditions. In exposed spots near the coast, the way the hardware is mounted matters as much as the material itself.

We also assist with repairs and maintenance checks. If a gate starts to sag, rub on paving or close poorly after settling, we can inspect the hinges, welds and lock side and put it back into line. Small issues are easier to sort early then after the frame has gone out of square.

Care, cleaning and longer service life

Stainless pedestrian gates need simple care. A rinse with clean water removes dust, salt and garden residue, especially if the gate is near the sea or close to irrigation spray. For fingerprints or general marks, a mild soap solution and a soft cloth is usually enough. Avoid harsh abrasives and strong chlorinated cleaners on visible surfaces, because they can dull the finish over time.

Once or twice a year, it helps to check the hinges, latch action and any moving hardware. If the gate has a lock, make sure the key turns without binding and that the strike plate still lines up. On properties with sand, pets or heavy foot traffic, the bottom area may need more regular cleaning so grit does not build up near the swing path.

If you notice staining around fittings, it is worth asking for a service check. That can catch loose fixings, minor movement in the posts or early wear on the latch before it becomes a bigger repair. With the right upkeep, a stainless gate can stay neat and practical for many years.

What to check before ordering

Before we make your gate, it helps to confirm a few practical details. This keeps the final result tidy and avoids delays on site. If you are replacing an old gate, take note of the existing opening size and whether the old gate opened inward or outward. If it is a new build, we can work from the wall opening, paving lines or architect plans and still confirm the details on site.

  • Opening width and finished height
  • Inward or outward swing direction
  • Left-hand or right-hand hinge side
  • Latch, lock or access control preference
  • Whether privacy, visibility or a mix is needed
  • Any nearby steps, paving falls or obstructions

It also helps to tell us if the gate must match an existing balustrade, handrail or boundary style. For properties in windier or more exposed areas, we may suggest a slightly different infill or frame layout so the gate is easier to use every day. If you are not sure, send photos and rough measurements first and we can guide the next step.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Do pedestrian gates need electricity?

Usually not. A basic pedestrian gate is manual and only needs hinges, a latch and proper fixing. If you want an electric lock or access control, then power may be needed at that point.

Can you make the gate to match existing rails or balustrades?

Yes. We can match the style, height and finish to existing stainless work so the gate sits neatly with the rest of the boundary.

How do I keep a stainless gate in good condition near the coast?

Rinse it with clean water, wipe off salt and dirt, and check the hinges and latch from time to time. Coastal properties benefit from regular cleaning, especially after windy weather.
