Planter Boxes

Stainless planter boxes suit coastal homes, courtyards and commercial entries where timber can warp and mild steel can rust. We make and install planter boxes in Knysna and across the Garden Route, with sizes and finishes set to suit the space and the planting.

What Stainless Planter Boxes Do Well

Stainless planter boxes are used where the planter must look neat, stay straight, and handle moisture without swelling or peeling. They work well for herbs, shrubs, screen planting and feature entrances, especially close to the coast where humidity and salt in the air can shorten the life of painted steel or timber. For Knysna, Sedgefield and Plettenberg Bay properties, that extra resistance matters.

We fabricate planter boxes for private homes, guest houses, offices, restaurants and retail fronts. The boxes can stand alone, sit in groups, or be built to line a walkway or edge a deck. If the planter is part of a bigger fit-out, we can match the finish to balustrades, handrails, gates or other stainless work on site. That keeps the look consistent and saves having to replace parts later.

  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
  • Handles damp, coastal conditions better than painted mild steel
  • Can be made as open-bottom or fully lined boxes
  • Can be fixed in place or left movable for future layout changes

Sizes, Shapes and Finish Options

Planter boxes are usually made to order because openings, paving lines and planting needs differ from site to site. Common box sizes range from small 400 mm square units up to long 2 400 mm runs for boundary edges, but we can fabricate smaller or larger units where required. Typical heights are 400 mm to 900 mm, with wall thickness and support set according to the span and whether the box will be lifted when full.

The steel grade, thickness and finish depend on the setting. For sheltered courtyards and covered entries, a brushed finish is often preferred for its clean look and easier maintenance. In exposed coastal positions, we usually advise a finish that is simple to wipe down and less likely to show fingerprints or water marks. Drainage holes, internal bracing and hidden feet can also be added, especially if the box sits on pavers, timber decking or tiled thresholds.

  • Lengths from 400 mm to 2 400 mm and beyond
  • Heights from 400 mm to 900 mm
  • Square, rectangular or tapered profiles
  • Optional inner liner, hidden castors or fixed base plates

Where Planter Boxes Suit Best in the Garden Route

We supply planter boxes for homes and businesses in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay. They are useful where a site needs softer screening, a clear walkway edge or a neat way to frame an entrance without putting up a solid wall. In commercial spaces, they help guide people through a forecourt, courtyard or reception area without making the area feel closed in.

They also work well on decks and balconies where a standard pot looks too small or too light. A wider box can hold more soil, which helps keep plants stable in wind and reduces how often they dry out. In coastal towns, that extra soil depth is practical because hot sun and salt spray can stress plants faster than inland. For guesthouses and restaurants, planter boxes can be used to break up parking edges, screen bins or create a simple green border at the front of the building.

  • Courtyards and braai areas
  • Decks, balconies and rooftop spaces
  • Shopfronts, office entries and reception courts
  • Pool areas, boundary edges and screening lines

Installation, Drainage and Power Needs

Most planter boxes do not need power or gas. They are fabricated, delivered and installed as steel units, then filled with suitable liners, soil and plants once they are in position. If the box includes hidden lighting, irrigation pumps or a heated element for a special application, we will discuss the wiring and access requirements up front, but that is not standard. In most cases the job only needs measured positioning and solid support under the finished weight.

Installation is important because a fully planted box can become very heavy. We check where the load will sit, especially on timber decks, suspended slabs or older paving. Drainage must be allowed for so water does not sit in the base and stain the surface below. In Knysna’s damp climate, that detail matters because standing water can leave marks and encourage corrosion on nearby hardware if the box is not set up properly. We can also anchor units where wind or public traffic is a concern.

  • No power or gas needed for standard planter boxes
  • Drainage holes or raised feet can be included
  • Base support checked for planted weight
  • Fixing options available for public or windy sites

Care, Cleaning and Long-Term Servicing

Stainless planter boxes are easy to maintain, but they still need proper cleaning, especially near the coast. A light wash with fresh water removes salt, dust and fertiliser residue. On brushed finishes, wipe in the direction of the grain to keep the surface even. If potting mix spills onto the metal, clean it off soon rather than leaving it damp against the steel. That small habit helps the finish last much longer.

We also offer maintenance checks if the planter is part of a bigger stainless installation. This can include inspecting welds, checking drainage, looking for movement after paving work, and restoring the surface where it has picked up scratches from pots or garden tools. If the box is fitted with liners or hidden fixings, those parts can be reviewed at the same time. For commercial sites, a simple yearly check is often enough to keep the units looking tidy and in service for years.

  • Wash with fresh water and a soft cloth
  • Do not leave fertiliser or wet soil against the steel
  • Check drainage after heavy rain
  • Ask for surface restoration if the finish is marked

What to Confirm Before Ordering

To make a planter box that fits properly, we need the opening size, preferred height, and whether it will stand alone or be fixed in place. It also helps to know what plants will go inside, because root depth and watering needs affect the box design. For example, shallow succulents need less depth than screening shrubs or small trees. If the planter will sit on a deck, we need to know the deck build-up so the finished weight can be planned correctly.

We also ask about the finish you want, whether the box must match other stainless work, and if the site is open to weather, public use or salt spray. If there is an existing threshold or paving line, a site measure is best before fabrication. That avoids gaps and awkward packing later. We do site measuring, shop drawings, fabrication and installation from our Knysna Industria base, so the whole process stays under one roof. It saves time, and it avoids mix ups once the unit is on site.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Do stainless planter boxes rust near the sea?

Good stainless steel resists coastal conditions far better than mild steel, but it still needs regular washing to remove salt and dirt. That is especially important in Knysna, Sedgefield and Plettenberg Bay.

Can you make planter boxes to fit an exact opening?

Yes. We measure the site and fabricate to the space available, including long runs, corner units and boxes that need to sit against paving, walls or deck edges.

Do planter boxes need drainage?

Yes. Drainage holes or a raised base help prevent standing water inside the box and protect the surface below. This also helps the plants stay healthy.
