Shelving Units

Stainless shelving units are a practical fit for kitchens, stores and washdown rooms where moisture, cleaning and daily handling are part of the job. We measure, fabricate and install units in Knysna and across the Garden Route for spaces that need tidy storage and easy cleaning.

Made for wet, busy and hygienic spaces

Our stainless shelving units are built for places that need regular washing, quick wipe-downs and storage that can handle daily use. They suit food prep areas, staff kitchens, bottle stores, washdown rooms, laundries and marine related work areas where humidity and salt air can be hard on painted steel or wood. In Knysna and the coastal towns nearby, stainless is often the cleaner choice because it does not absorb moisture and it keeps its shape better in damp conditions.

Each unit can be made as a wall shelf, freestanding rack, corner unit or multi-tier storage frame. We fabricate to the size you actually need, so if your passage is narrow or your prep area has a tight corner, the shelving can be adjusted to suit. In practice that means fewer wasted metres and less clutter on the floor. It also makes cleaning easier, which is important in kitchens and washdown rooms where hygiene checks matter.

We use material thickness and support spacing according to the load and the way the unit will be used. Light duty shelving is suitable for containers, ingredients and small equipment. Heavier duty units are made for stock, crates, boxed goods and tools. If the shelves will carry liquid containers, we can add a slightly raised lip or back return to help keep items from sliding off when the surface gets wet.

Sizes, shelf layouts and support options

Stainless shelving units are normally quoted by overall width, depth and height, then by the number of shelves and the load each level needs to carry. Common shop and kitchen sizes are 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm and 1800 mm wide, with depths from 300 mm to 600 mm depending on the available space. Heights often range from 1200 mm to 2100 mm, but custom sizes are available if you need a unit to fit under a counter, against a bulkhead or into a service room with low head height.

We can build open shelf frames for easy access or enclosed style units with side returns and bracing where extra stability is needed. For some spaces, adjustable shelf heights are useful because stock changes over time. In other cases fixed shelves are better, especially when the items are heavy or the unit will be cleaned down with water and detergent every day.

  • Material options: brushed stainless for general use, polished finish for a cleaner look, or a heavier gauge for loaded storage
  • Shelf style: flat shelves, lipped shelves, perforated shelves for drainage, or solid top and bottom boards in stainless
  • Mounting: wall mounted, floor standing, or a combination with wall ties for added stability
  • Extras: adjustable feet, lockable caster wheels, drainage holes, splash backs and undershelf bracing

If the shelving is going into a coastal property or a wash area with chemicals, we will check the application and suggest the right grade and finish. This helps reduce staining, surface pitting and early wear.

Where stainless shelving works best

These units are used across kitchens, stores, change rooms, cleaning stores and maintenance spaces. In food areas, stainless shelving helps keep ingredients and utensils off the floor and away from splash zones. In retail and back-of-house stores, it gives neat holding space for stock, packaging and cleaning products. In washdown rooms and laundries, the unit stays easier to maintain than timber or coated steel, especially where hoses, steam and cleaning agents are used often.

We also supply shelving for small workshops, laboratory style spaces, marine fitout areas and plant rooms where organised storage saves time. If your site runs on generator backup or deals with load-shedding, it helps to keep essential items in one known place. That includes batteries, torches, change parts and cleaning stock, so staff are not searching when power is off or a shift is moving quickly.

  • Kitchens and canteens that need quick cleaning and tidy storage
  • Shops and storerooms that need stronger shelving than chipboard or coated frames
  • Washdown rooms, laundries and utility spaces with high moisture levels
  • Coastal homes, guesthouses and marine related workrooms in the Garden Route

Because every site is different, we look at traffic flow, cleaning method and what the shelves will carry before we finalise the layout. That way the unit fits the room instead of forcing the room to fit the unit.

Measurement, fabrication and installation on site

We start with site measuring and a practical check of wall type, floor level and access. A shelving unit that looks simple on paper can still need careful setting out if the floor falls slightly, the wall is not plumb or pipes run behind the proposed position. Our workshop in Knysna Industria fabricates the unit to the agreed sizes, then our installation team fits it on site in a way that is neat and secure.

Most shelving installations do not need electrical or gas work. That makes them easier to schedule and less disruptive for a working kitchen or store. If the unit is going into a prep area with nearby equipment, we allow for clearances, heat sources and cleaning access so the shelves do not create a maintenance problem later. Where floor fixing is required, we use suitable anchors for the substrate and check that the unit is level before handover.

For wall mounted shelving, it is important that the fixing points match the wall structure. In some cases we fit a continuous support rail or bracketing system to spread the load more evenly. If the unit is freestanding, we can add back ties or a low base plinth for better stability, especially in narrow spaces or where stock is moved frequently.

Care, cleaning and ongoing servicing

Stainless shelving needs simple but regular care. A soft cloth, mild detergent and clean water are usually enough for day to day cleaning. In coastal areas like Knysna, Sedgefield and Wilderness, wiping down salt residue helps prevent surface marking over time. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chlorine products unless they are required by your cleaning process and rinsed off properly afterwards.

We also offer maintenance checks and stainless repairs if a unit gets dented, loose fittings develop or a shelf needs re-bracing. In a busy kitchen or store, small issues can become bigger if they are ignored. A loose bracket, wobble in the frame or damaged wall fixing should be dealt with early. It saves downtime and keeps staff from overloading the unit in the wrong place.

  • Check fasteners and wall mounts every few months
  • Wipe down after heavy cleaning so moisture does not sit in joints
  • Do not exceed the intended shelf load
  • Keep corrosive chemicals in sealed containers and off direct contact points

If a shelf starts to show tea staining or surface marks, we can often restore the finish with proper cleaning and polishing methods. That is quicker and cheaper than replacing the whole unit.

What to confirm before you order

Before we make a shelving unit, it helps to have the room measurements, the type of items to be stored and the surface the unit will stand on or attach to. This includes width, depth, height, ceiling clearance and any skirtings, pipes, power points or splash backs that may affect the fit. If the shelves will carry heavy stock, tell us the approximate weight per shelf so we can size the frame properly.

It is also worth confirming the finish you want, whether you need adjustable feet, whether the unit must be wall mounted, and whether any corners or ends need to be closed off for hygiene. In food areas, a smooth finish and easy access for mopping can matter more than looks. In stores, access and load capacity usually come first.

If you are unsure, send us a sketch or photos of the room and we can advise on a sensible layout. We work across Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay, and we are used to measuring in real working spaces where time is limited and the site may already be occupied. A clear brief at the start saves rework later, and keeps the final unit doing exactly what it should.

For a practical shelving solution that suits your space and the way you work, Sisonke Stainless can handle the measuring, fabrication and installation from one point.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Do stainless shelving units need special power or gas connections?

No. Shelving units are passive equipment and normally need no power or gas. We only need to check nearby services during measuring so the unit does not interfere with existing equipment.

Can you make a shelving unit to fit a tight corner or under a counter?

Yes. We fabricate to your site measurements, so we can make corner units, low units and custom heights to suit the room and the items you want to store.

How do I know which shelf load I need?

Tell us what will be stored on each level and the approximate weight. Light stock, kitchen containers and tools need different support from heavy crates, liquids or boxed goods.
